What is Form E?

Form E is the financial statement used in England and Wales to disclose your assets, debts, income, needs and supporting documents in divorce financial remedy proceedings. It is around 28 pages and the same form is used in mediation and voluntary disclosure.

The form itself is free, but the difficulty is knowing what counts, which documents to attach, and how to present figures consistently. That is exactly what the guided questionnaire above is designed to support.

Why complete it with Divvio

  • Official Form E layout at export
  • Automatic totals keep your figures consistent
  • Autosave — pick up on any device
  • Personalised document checklist as you go
  • One-off £79 for Self-Serve export
Form E is usually exchanged no later than 35 days before the first appointment.

Can you complete Form E yourself?

Often, yes. Form E asks for facts: your documents, income, assets, debts and needs. A solicitor still needs you to supply all of that. What they add is legal judgement, so for many people the sensible route is to complete the disclosure themselves and pay for advice only where a genuinely difficult issue appears.

Usually realistic on your own

  • You are employed rather than running a complex business
  • You can get your own bank, mortgage, payslip and pension documents
  • You both broadly know what assets exist, even if you disagree on the split
  • Your assets are a home, pensions, savings or debts, not trusts or overseas structures

Get legal advice first if you have

  • A business, partnership or director loan account
  • Trusts, inherited or pre-marital assets that may be disputed
  • Property or assets abroad
  • Defined benefit pensions or a large pension imbalance
  • Suspected hidden assets or non-disclosure
  • Domestic abuse, or pressure to agree quickly

You can still do the admin yourself. Take advice on that issue before you make assumptions that are hard to unwind.

Completing Form E online is not the same as filing it with HMCTS. Entering your answers online produces your formatted Form E PDF; filing or exchanging means sending that signed Statement of Truth together with your supporting document bundle in line with your court directions (typically 35 days before the First Appointment), solicitor correspondence or mediation agreement. Once disclosure is exchanged and an agreement is reached, the next stage is usually a consent order supported by Form D81.

Why the blank 30-page GOV.UK Form E PDF trips people up

The official HMCTS Form E (01.23) PDF on GOV.UK is completely free to download, and if your finances are very simple and you are comfortable checking every subtotal manually, that blank PDF may be all you need. Most people run into trouble not because the questions are secret, but because a flat PDF asks you to coordinate dates, property equity, 12 months of statements, pension valuations and monthly budgets simultaneously with zero guardrails.

No check on arithmetic or subtotals

In a static PDF, an innocent addition slip between Part 2 schedules and the summary tables can look like careless or incomplete disclosure when forms are exchanged.

Fund value vs CETV confusion on pensions

A blank box in section 2.13 will not warn you that annual 'fund values' are rejected — courts and mediators need the official Cash Equivalent Transfer Value (CETV) or proof it has been requested.

Monthly vs annual mix-ups in Part 3

Mixing weekly childcare, quarterly bills, annual car insurance and monthly rent in the income-needs schedule skews your budget unless every figure is normalised to the same period.

Cramped boxes & manual continuation sheets

Real households often have more than two bank accounts, several credit cards or context that will not fit a three-line box. Divvio generates cross-referenced continuation sheets automatically.

What online Form E completion can — and cannot — do

A guided online tool replaces the administrative slog of Form E: translating court wording into plain English, autosaving across sessions while you wait for providers, flagging missing evidence, keeping totals consistent, and formatting continuation sheets cleanly. It cannot replace legal strategy — it will not tell you what settlement percentage to accept, whether to waive a pension claim, whether a clean break is appropriate, or how to prove hidden assets. Where one or two thorny points arise, completing your factual Form E online first means any paid hour with a family solicitor goes straight into high-value legal advice rather than typing bank balances.

What all five Parts of Form E cover

Divvio mirrors the official HMCTS Form E structure from start to finish (see our completed Form E example for how a finished disclosure reads):

Part 1 — General information

Names, dates of marriage and separation, children's living and schooling details, health, current home arrangements and employment status.

Part 2 — Financial details & income (2.1–2.20)

Family home and other property, 12 months of bank and building society accounts, ISAs and investments, life policies, personal assets over £500, liabilities, business interests, pensions (CETVs), and earned/self-employed/benefit income.

Part 3 — Income & capital needs

Your current and future monthly budget for yourself and any dependent children, plus capital needs such as rehousing costs, mortgage capacity and vehicle replacement.

Part 4 — Other information

Standard of living during the marriage, significant changes in assets or income over the last 12 months, non-matrimonial or inherited contributions, and any financially relevant context.

Part 5 — Orders sought, truth & documents

Whether you are ready to state the financial orders sought, your signed Statement of Truth, and the Schedule of Documents confirming what evidence is attached or to follow.

A sensible 6-step order to work in

Most Form E mistakes happen when people try to fill in all 30 pages in one stressed evening before their documents are in motion. Work in this order instead:

1. Request slow third-party figures on day one

Ask every workplace and personal pension scheme for an official CETV (free once every 12 months, but providers can take 6–12 weeks) and request a mortgage redemption statement.

2. Complete factual Part 1 background immediately

Get names, dates, children's details and housing facts saved in your first 15-minute session so the form stops feeling like a blank mountain.

3. Work through accounts, property and debts with statements open

Download 12 months of statements for every sole and joint bank account, enter closing balances accurately, and include small or dormant accounts rather than rounding from memory.

4. Build a realistic, honest monthly budget in Part 3

Form E is not a test of modesty: understating groceries, utilities, children's clubs or annual car costs weakens your housing and income-needs case later.

5. Take targeted legal advice on any red-flag point

Where you have a defined-benefit pension, business valuation, pre-marital asset argument or non-disclosure concern, arrive at a fixed-fee solicitor meeting with your draft Form E already organised.

6. Review, sign the Statement of Truth, and exchange on time

Export your official HMCTS Form E PDF, check every figure against your attached Schedule of Documents, sign honestly, and serve/file in line with your court order or mediation agreement.

Form E online: common questions

Can I really complete Form E online myself?+

Yes. Where your finances are reasonably straightforward, you can complete Form E yourself with structured guidance. Divvio walks you through every section in plain English, calculates totals, and produces a PDF in the official Form E layout. Get independent advice if you have a business, trust, overseas assets, suspected hidden assets, or any safety concerns.

How much does it cost?+

It is free to start and work through the questionnaire — you only pay when you are ready to download your completed Form E. Self-Serve is £79, against the £1,500–£3,000 a solicitor typically charges to prepare the same disclosure. Assisted Review is optional and purchased separately per Form E. Every purchase is covered by a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Is my information safe?+

We use provider-managed encryption at rest and encryption in transit, and we do not sell your data. Divvio personnel and processors receive access only as needed to operate the service. If you separately choose mediation sharing, your named mediator or practice receives the selected information as a separate controller. You can permanently delete your account from the dashboard; our privacy policy explains the limited mediation records that may be anonymised or retained.

What if I pay and it's not right for me?+

Every purchase includes a 14-day money-back guarantee. Change your mind before downloading your completed PDF and it's an automatic full refund, no questions asked. Already downloaded? Email support@divvio.co.uk anyway — we review those requests individually. Your statutory rights are unaffected.

Does the PDF use the official Form E layout?+

Yes. The output follows the official HMCTS Form E structure, with continuation sheets generated automatically where your answers run long. You review it before signing and exchanging it. You can view a watermarked sample of the finished PDF before you start.

Is completing Form E online the same as filing it?+

No. Completing Form E online means entering your answers through a guided tool and producing the finished PDF. Filing or exchanging it means sending the signed form and documents as your court timetable, solicitor correspondence or mediation process requires. The court does not receive anything automatically.

Do I need an account to start?+

No. You can begin the questionnaire straight away with no account. You only create an account to save your progress across devices and to download the finished form.

What documents will I need?+

Typically around 12 months of bank statements, mortgage statements, property valuations, pension CETVs, payslips and your P60 (or tax returns if self-employed), and statements for any debts. Divvio builds a personalised checklist as you go.

How long does it take?+

Most people complete Form E across a few short sessions. Gathering documents is usually the slowest part — request pension CETVs early, as providers can take up to three months.
